गरुड उवाच सख्यं मेऽस्तु त्वया देव यथेच्छसि पुरंदर बलं तु मम जानीहि महच्चासह्यमेव च
Gāruḍa said: "O Purandara! As you wish, let there be friendship between us. But know that my strength is great and hard to bear.
गरुड़ ने कहा: "हे पुरंदर! जैसी तुम्हारी इच्छा हो, हमारे बीच मित्रता हो। लेकिन यह जान लो कि मेरी शक्ति महान है और उसे सहन करना कठिन है।"
O Śatakratu! There is no doubt that the learned do not approve of speaking highly of one's own strength or of praising one's own qualities.
हे शतक्रतु! इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि विद्वान व्यक्ति अपनी ताकत के बारे में अधिक बात करना या अपने गुणों की प्रशंसा करना पसंद नहीं करते हैं।
O friend! Since we are now friends and since you ask me, I will tell you, though there should never be self-praise without reason.
अबे यार! चूँकि अब हम दोस्त हैं और आप मुझसे पूछेंगे तो बता दूँगा, हालाँकि कभी भी बिना वजह आत्मप्रशंसा नहीं करनी चाहिए।
O Śākra! On a single one of my feathers, without any fatigue, I can bear the wide world with its mountains, forests, oceans and even you suspended there,
हे शक्र! अपने एक पंख पर, बिना किसी थकान के, मैं विशाल संसार को उसके पहाड़ों, जंगलों, महासागरों और यहाँ तक कि वहाँ लटके हुए आपके साथ सहन कर सकता हूँ,

यहाँ तक कि सभी विश्व एक साथ, अपनी सभी गतिशील और अचल वस्तुओं के साथ। इसे मेरी बहुत बड़ी ताकत समझो।”
Sauti said: O Śaunaka! When the hero said this, the illustrious and prosperous lord, the crowned king of the gods, the bringer of welfare to all beings, said,

प्रतिगृह्यतामिदानीं मे सख्यमानन्त्यमुत्तमम् न कार्यं तव सोमेन मम सोमः प्रदीयताम् अस्मांस्ते हि प्रबाधेयुर्येभ्यो दद्याद्भवानिमम्
"Now accept my eternal and supreme friendship. If you do not require the somā, please return the somā to me. Those to whom you give it will always overcome us."
"अब मेरी शाश्वत और सर्वोच्च मित्रता स्वीकार करें। यदि आपको सोम की आवश्यकता नहीं है, तो कृपया मुझे सोम लौटा दें। जिन लोगों को आप सोम देंगे वे हमेशा हम पर विजय प्राप्त करेंगे।"
Gāruḍa replied: "There is a reason why I am taking the somā away. I will not give the somā to anyone to drink.
गरुड़ ने उत्तर दिया: "एक कारण है कि मैं सोम को ले जा रहा हूँ। मैं सोम को किसी को पीने के लिए नहीं दूँगा।
O god with the thousand eyes! O ruler of the three worlds! When I have put it down, you can immediately pick it up and bring it back."
हे हजार आँखों वाले भगवान! हे तीनों लोकों के स्वामी! जब मैंने इसे नीचे रख दिया है, तो आप इसे तुरंत उठा सकते हैं और वापस ला सकते हैं।"
Śākra said: "O you who are born of an egg! Your words please me. O best of the birds! Ask from me any boon that you desire."
शक्र ने कहा: "हे अंडे से जन्मे! आपके शब्द मुझे प्रसन्न करते हैं। हे पक्षीश्रेष्ठ! आप जो चाहें मुझसे कोई वरदान मांगें।"
Sūta said: Being thus addressed, he remembered Kadrū's sons and his mother's slavery through deception and said,
सूत ने कहा: इस प्रकार संबोधित किए जाने पर, उन्हें कद्रू के पुत्रों और धोखे से अपनी माँ की गुलामी की याद आई और उन्होंने कहा,
"O Śākra! I have the power to do what I desire. Yet, I will be a supplicant before you. Let the mighty snakes be my food."
"हे शक्र! मुझमें वह करने की शक्ति है जो मैं चाहता हूँ। फिर भी, मैं आपके समक्ष याचक बनूँगा। शक्तिशाली साँपों को मेरा भोजन बनने दीजिए।"
The enemy of the dānava-s agreed and said, "I shall take the somā away when you have put it down."
दानवों के शत्रु ने सहमति व्यक्त की और कहा, "जब आप सोम को रख देंगे तो मैं उसे ले लूँगा।"
Thereafter, with great speed, Suparṇa went to his mother. In great delight, he told all the snakes, "I have brought you the amṛtā.
इसके बाद सुपर्ण बड़े वेग से अपनी माता के पास गया। अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर उन्होंने सभी साँपों से कहा, "मैं तुम्हारे लिए अमृत लाया हूँ।
I will place it for you on this kuśa gras-s. O snakes! Drink it after bathing and purifying yourselves through rites.
मैं इसे तुम्हारे लिए इस कुश घास पर रखूंगा। हे साँपों! स्नान करके और संस्कारों से शुद्ध होकर इसे पी लो।

अदासी चैव मातेयमद्यप्रभृति चास्तु मे यथोक्तं भवतामेतद्वचो मे प्रतिपादितम्
I have done what you asked me to do.Therefore, as you had promised, let my mother be freed from her slavery at this very instant."
मैंने वही किया है जो आपने मुझसे करने को कहा था। इसलिए, जैसा कि आपने वादा किया था, मेरी माँ को इसी क्षण उसकी दासता से मुक्त कर दिया जाए।"
The snakes agreed and went off to have their baths. Śākra picked up the amṛtā and went off to heaven.
साँप सहमत हो गए और स्नान करने चले गए। शक्र ने अमृत उठाया और स्वर्ग चले गए।
After bathing and purifying themselves through prayers and rites, the snakes joyfully returned to the place where the somā had been kept, to drink it.
स्नान करने और प्रार्थनाओं और अनुष्ठानों के माध्यम से खुद को शुद्ध करने के बाद, सांप खुशी-खुशी उस स्थान पर लौट आए जहां सोम को पीने के लिए रखा गया था।
But the snakes found that they had been deceived. They began to lick the dārbha gras-s on which the somā had been placed.
परन्तु साँपों को पता चला कि उनके साथ धोखा हुआ है। वे उस दर्भ ग्रास को चाटने लगे जिस पर सोम रखा हुआ था।
Because of this act, the tongues of the snakes were split in two and became forked. From that day, because of contact with the amṛtā, the dārbha gras-s became sacred.
इस हरकत की वजह से सांपों की जीभ दो हिस्सों में बंट गई और कांटेदार हो गई। उस दिन से, अमृत के संपर्क के कारण, दर्भ ग्रास पवित्र हो गया।
Thereafter, Suparṇa happily lived in that forest with his mother. He delighted Vinatā by eating snakes, being honoured by all birds and always earning fame.
इसके बाद सुपर्ण अपनी माता के साथ उस वन में सुखपूर्वक रहने लगा। उसने साँपों को खाकर विनता को प्रसन्न किया, सभी पक्षियों द्वारा सम्मानित किया गया और सदैव प्रसिद्धि अर्जित की।
Without a doubt, he who hears this story or recites it in an assembly of Brāhmana-s, will attain heaven, obtaining his share of merit from the glorification of the great-souled lord of the birds.
निस्संदेह, जो इस कथा को सुनता है या ब्राह्मणों की सभा में इसका पाठ करता है, वह पक्षियों के महान आत्मा स्वामी की महिमा से अपने पुण्य का हिस्सा प्राप्त करके स्वर्ग प्राप्त करेगा।
